October 12, 2018: White Lotus Philanthropy Ltd. (“White Lotus”) is proud to announce that it has signed two grants with Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (“GWBI”), a monastery for Buddhist nuns based in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The first grant is USD500,000 and will be used towards GWBI monastics’ living expenses. The second grant value is USD500,000 and will be used towards construction of a new Buddhist monastery for GWBI.
January 4, 2019: Per above grants, White Lotus has disbursed the following amounts to GWBI.
GWBI Monastics’ Living Expenses: USD317,725.00
GWBI Construction: USD82,275.00
Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute
White Lotus recognizes the significant work that Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute has done as well as its future plans with regards to preserving and increasing awareness of the Buddhist traditions.
Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute is a monastery where nuns study and practice the teachings of Buddha.
Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute’s mission is as follows:
- GWBI hopes to actualize the Buddhist teachings of compassion and wisdom in all aspects of their lives, bringing happiness and warmth to others.
- GWBI wishes to contribute to the betterment of their community and their environment, and to have a positive impact throughout the world.
- In order to actualize the Buddhist teachings, GWBI aspires to thoroughly understand the Buddhist teachings through the study of The Five Great Treatises.
- GWBI seeks to become a world-class Buddhist institute for nuns and laity seeking to learn the teachings of Buddha.
As of 2018, there are approximately 150 Buddhist nuns at GWBI, coming from all over the world: Canada, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States. They currently reside in their monastery located in Vernon Bridge but will be moving to Brudenell in the future.
