Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute

White Lotus recognizes the significant work that Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute has done as well as its future plans on preserving and increasing awareness of the Buddhist traditions.

Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (“GWBI”) is a monastery for Buddhist nuns, located in Prince Edward Island, Canada. GWBI became a registered charity (number: 81823 2480 RR0001) March 2013. As of September 2021, there are approximately 500 nuns coming from all over the world: Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States. They currently reside in a temporary location in Vernon Bridge but will be moving to Brudenell once their monastery is constructed.

Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute would like to preserve and increase awareness of the Buddhist culture. The heart of Buddhism is compassion. Currently, the world is experiencing enormous social, cultural and political upheavals. The number of qualified Buddhist scholars is decreasing. There is danger in losing this world heritage. As such, GWBI’s mission is to:

  1. Preserve, study, and understand Buddhist teachings, in hopes of spreading compassion and wisdom,
  2. Establish and offer a distinguished Buddhist curriculum and learning environment for females,
  3. Put their faith into everyday practice by helping out and giving back to their community (e.g., mindfulness sessions, spiritual retreats, tree planting, roadside cleanup, interfaith dialogue, translations etc.).
